Senior Planning and Evaluation Advisor, UNDP Rwanda endorses Dr David Nabarro as next Director-General of the World Health Organization.

Dr. Nabarro is fully capable of regenerating the focus and mission of the world’s most prominent health institution

I was privileged to be among a group of UN colleagues, government leaders and other development practitioners working with Dr. David Nabarro on the complex challenges of avian and pandemic influenza, as well as other emerging infectious diseases during the period 2007-2010 in global hotspots.

Dr. Nabarro displayed many qualities associated with global thought leadership, including profound persuasive qualities, a deep sense of awareness, and world class communication skills. He reached across boundaries, influenced and galvanized ideas and aligned actions in diverse sectors and fields, advocating for an effective, whole-of-society One Health approach. In the process, he grew a large network and community of practitioners with a common mission. He is a devoted and selfless leader whose priority is to stimulate others to find purpose and to inspire shared ownership.

UN agencies, including the WHO, are often large, complex, powerful organizations with different factions and competing priorities, as became evident during the Ebola response. I believe Dr. Nabarro is fully capable of regenerating the focus and mission of the world’s most prominent health institution, increasing both its effectiveness to facilitate attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals and capacity to serve within the spirit of UN Reform and Delivering as One.
